Coarse Fishing Setup for Beginners UK: A Simple First Setup

The simplest useful starting point

If you are completely new to coarse fishing, start with one method and one target rather than buying specialist tackle for every species. On a typical stillwater, a basic float or light feeder setup can cover roach, bream, perch, tench and smaller carp. The finder then narrows the line, hooklength and hook choice to the fish, venue and bait you actually plan to use.

What you need on the bank

• Rod and reel or pole: choose the tool that matches the method you intend to learn first.
• Mainline and hooklength: keep them balanced; the hooklength is normally the finer terminal section.
• Float, feeder or leger weight: use one presentation rather than carrying every possible rig.
• Hooks matched to bait: small maggots need a different hook from corn, bread, worm or a hair-rigged pellet.
• Landing and unhooking equipment: carry a suitable landing net and a disgorger or forceps, and follow the fishery's own fish-care rules.

Choose your first method

Float fishing is visual and well suited to learning depth, feeding and bite indication. Feeder fishing is useful when you want to fish on the bottom or at greater range. Pole fishing gives very accurate presentation on canals and commercial fisheries. There is no need to learn all three at once.

Do not choose line by fish weight alone

The same species can need very different tackle in open water and beside heavy weed. Flow, feeder weight, casting distance and nearby snags can justify stronger mainline even when the target fish is unchanged. That is why the finder uses method, venue and cover as separate inputs.
