What Strength Fishing Line Do I Need for Coarse Fishing?

Use species, method, flow and cover to choose a sensible mainline starting range.

A simple decision rule

Choose line strength from the method and environment rather than species name alone. Fine float and pole rigs for small silverfish may use very light lines, while Method feeders, heavy river feeders and snaggy margins require much stronger tackle.

When to step up

• Heavy weed, reeds, roots or other snags.
• Fast river flow or heavy feeders/leads.
• Large carp, barbel or specimen fish.
• Long casting where a heavier feeder increases casting load.

When finesse matters

Clear water, small hookbaits and pressured silverfish can justify finer hooklengths, provided doing so is safe for the fish and appropriate to the venue.
